Tim and Grit Cashin- Leongatha South GippsDairy Region

Tim and Grit, Cashin Family

Leongatha South, GippsDairy Region

Tim and Grit Cashin and their two children commenced dairy farming in July 2006 in a lease arrangement on Tim’s family farm at Leongatha South milking 200 cows. The leased area is 120ha owned by Tim’s mother, another 40 ha leased next door was added in 2010, now a further 40 ha of leased turnout has been taken on. Some agistment has been sourced if required. They have built the herd up to 300 cows.

Goals of the Cashin/Leongatha South Focus Farm:

  • To use the current low debt position on the farm to allow any growth/expansion/purchasing opportunities to be explored should they, and when they come along;

  • Set targets for the farm physical and financial performance and hopefully meet these targets;

  • Evaluate the herd’s genetic capability and choose the right direction for the breeding of the herd;

  • Achieve all of the above, whilst maintaining a work-life balance and quality of life

    Comments:

    Sold 10 cull cows Milker condition score 4.5-4.75. Pre grazing pasture cover is around 1900-2100 kgDM/ha with post grazing residuals at 1400kgDM. Pasture growth rate required now at 15kgDM/ha/day to hold cover and match eat rate. Last nitrogen applied was 80 kg/ha urea 30 days ago, no additional application to be made unless perhaps after significant rainfall greater than 20 mm.

    Feed plan for next two months is to aim for DMI of 18-20kgDM/cow/day. This would be made up of 5kgDM vetch (2 squares), 5kgDM silage (4 rolls), 7.2kgDM barley (8kg as fed) and balance of pasture. As pasture runs out review inputs with slightly more silage going in, or accept the production that results.
