Mumford family - Won Wron, GippsDairy Region

Paul and Lisa Mumford

Paul and Lisa Mumford have expanded the family farm that Paul grew-up on and are currently operating on around 323 hectares of mainly dryland.

This year they will be milking around 400 of their high quality Jerseys – a drop of around 20 cows because of the milk price drop of earlier this year.

Apart from the home farm at Greig’s Road, the Mumford’s also own another 215 acre farm at Binginwarri, which is not included in this Focus Farm.

Paul and Lisa are hoping the Focus Farm can help spread knowledge across generations, with an aim of boosting the farm business skill of their employee, Damien Becker.

The farm accounts will be fully open during this Focus Farm, with the Mumfords happy to “lay it all out on the table” in the interests of a more transparent and productive process.

Specific challenges the Mumfords are addressing as Focus Farmers include:

1. Lifting pasture grown and consumed to reduce the reliance on purchased fodder. The aim is to lift it from a long term average of 7tDm/ha to 8tDM/ha;
2. Looking at the total business performance and making it all work. The measure is to generate more cash to allow debt reduction;
3. Investigate career pathways for young people in the industry – is there a model that works best?
4. Learn to eradicate or manage Kikuyu. The aim is focus on the better milking areas as a priority.
5. Look at the genetic merit of the herd. Is it value for money or unnecessary spin?
