Dan and Cindy Knee- Toora GippsDairy Region

Dan and Cindy Knee

Toora North,

GippsDairy Region

Dan and Cindy Knee have a 10 year plan to purchase the property from Dan’s parents. To achieve this they are happy to keep herd size similar to current as long as they can increase cash surplus keep debt down and still produce quality milk.

Since Dan started working on the farm with his parents in 2000 he has purchased several adjacent land parcels to add to the main farm. In 2014 it was decided that it was a good time for Dan and Cindy to take more on and for Bruce and Rae Dan’s parents to start easing into retirement. They formed a business partnership to run the farm, purchasing the cows and leasing the farm from Bruce and Rae.

Goals of the Toora North Focus Farm family:

  • Develop our business and generate cash surpluses that ensures success from dairy farming.

  • Increase profitable milk production from the cows. This increased profit could be by maintaining production with lower purchased feed inputs or cows increasing production from better silage and pasture management.

  • Maintain a low BMCC with minimal incidence of mastitis.

  • Improve the young stock rearing process, in and out of the calf shed for better replacements.

Cow condition good and holding Cell count 130 000

Considered to be no pasture left now, therefore basically no rotation, cows are moving around closer milking area with priority to ensure shade and water. Heifers are grazing around further away paddocks.

8ha of chicory has estimated 3.5tDM/ha. Cows are in 25 day rotation around the crop.

110 R2 heifers including 17 autumn calvers get 1-1.5 rolls silage/day and new paddock every second day. All calves were weighed last week and divided into two groups. The group over 170 kg LWT get 2kg crushed wheat each day, the group weighing below 170 kg get 2kg calf pellets. Both calf groups get silage every day.
