Bruce and Fiona Manintveld- Mirboo North GippsDairy Region

Bruce and Fiona Manintveld

Mirboo North, GippsDairy Region

Bruce and Fiona purchased the property in July 2013 and started milking 280 cows the herd is predominantly Jersey. The farm is carefully managed to reduce debt as quickly as possible through working on ways to increase pasture consumption and animal performance.

Before purchasing the farm Bruce and Fiona share-farmed for 8 years, their emphasis on pasture consumption has been very consistent over their farming career, and extends also to the feeding program for their dairy heifers.

For Bruce and Fiona their key goal is:

  • To be debt free in 10 years

There are a number of subsequent goals:

  • To tackle the BMCC/mastitis situation (in first 12 months) - achieved

  • To address the effluent disposal system (within two years – achieved already

  • To upgrade the water system

  • To plant more trees/shelter belts

Their debt servicing is in two parts: A five year principal and interest loan aimed at reducing debt by $300,000 in 5 years, and an interest only loan on the balance. It was felt that a reasonable assessment would be that the principal and interest loan is kept up to date and some additional debt cleared.
